美国加州某大学，佐伊·麦康奈尔（奥利维亚·王尔德 Olivia Wilde 饰）和恋人兼合作者弗兰克·沃顿（马克·杜普拉斯 Mark Duplass 饰）正在进行一项复生项目，在新人艾娃摄像机的记录下，他们以及团队成员克莱、尼克即将迎来项目的里程碑时刻。历经艰辛，他们的实验终于获得成功，一条早已死亡的狗成功复生。可就在此时，他们的研究内容被校方和资助公司获知，数年来辛勤的研究成果和数据全部被资助方收走。不甘心失败的佐伊和弗兰克等人趁着夜晚再度闯入实验室，谁知期间发生意外，佐伊不幸触电身亡。
